Helpful Tile Installation Tips

Whether you are just entering into your first tile project or you have been doing such an install for quite some time, you will find that there are different ways to bring your skills to a whole new level. These professional tricks and tips will help you to deal with diagonal layouts, which are usually complicated, as well as uneven walls, cleaning up dried mortar, extra large tiles and many other issues.

Diagonal Layouts

When working diagonally, you usually want to mark diagonal 45 degree lines either on your wall or your floor. However, when the angle isn't exactly 45 degrees, you may find that getting the exact lines will be difficult. Try marking a single line for your layout and then center your tiles over it, simply by aligning the corners of the tiles with your line. You can then build a pyramid that is centered on your line and use the pyramid side to help align each course on the diagonal. A good tip is to check your sides of the pyramid from time to time using a straight edge.

Thin Set Specialty Mortar

Many tile enthusiasts will tell you that a thin set mortar is going to be the best adhesive for most tile options. If you are setting tiles that are going to be larger than 12x12 inches, you will want to look for large tile, large format, or medium bed on the labeling. Bigger tiles are going to require a much thicker bed and even a medium bed style mortar is not going to lose bonding strength if you have to lay it on thick. You will also find it to be firmer and shrink less as the mortar hardens.

Tips For Layout

If you are working out a wall niche, it is going to be a good idea to lay out your time and take a number of measurements to make sure that you have the right dimensions. When you are able to custom size your niche to fit between full tiles, you are going to have a much better looking install while avoiding problems with cutting.
